No Longer Uncertain. You’re Called!

There’s no denying it, we all struggle with uncertainty and what our calling in life is. Or better yet, how it’s supposed to work.

If you’ve been following along with us from the beginning of our mini study of 2 Timothy 1:7, then hooray! Thanks for joining this new community online. But if you’re wondering what the last three posts have been talking about, I suggest you start with the first one and then follow the posts back here.

See you soon, okay?

Reassured By Where You’ve Already Been

Looking in on Timothy in this moment, you’d think that he would have been more than ready to take up the mantle that Paul was laying down.
It looks inevitable from where we stand. He was the one qualified to continue the spread of the gospel and establish new churches.

Timothy had all the right credentials. The man had the inside scoop. And he’d weathered some things.

Yet, at some point he’d begun to doubt. Hesitate. Decide that maybe God had it wrong. And that he wasn’t ready.

But Paul was about to remind him that the proof was in where he had already been. That God’s equipping had already begun long before that moment. And that the proof was right there in his own family, no less.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

2 Timothy 1:5

Paul was reminding him that Timothy could look back and see where God had been laying out His holy plan the whole time. And this included the amazing faith of his grandmother and mother. The two men were so close that Paul could see where Timothy’s legacy began.

This tells me two things.

Sometimes we need to reflect back on all the ways God’s hand is seen moving in our lives. Especially when we want to trust where He’s taking us next.

And secondly, that God intentionally places people in our lives as witnesses to His purposes and plans, so that we can be encouraged. It will mean that their words carry weight, and that their wisdom resonates in deeply personal ways.

Maybe you have this same kind of mentor and dear friend in your life. Someone God has placed there to challenge you and instruct you. To be His voice for those times we’re unsure that we’re hearing correctly. If you do, this is an incredibel gift!
And if you’re not sure, ask Him to reveal who He wants to place in your life for that very purpose.

What He’ll Accomplish Through You Matters

So what was the result of these faith-boosting words for Timothy?

This man known for being timid and reserved (1 Corinthians 16:10) went on to become the leader of the church at Ephesus and surrounding regions. And until his death, lived up to his name “Timotheos” which in the Greek means “honoring God“.

It was no small thing that God had selected him at such a pivitol time in the church to carry the torch and administer the gospel.

When the God of the universe calls you, he’ll equip you. And what He accomplishes through you, matters. Timothy’s legacy of faith is still changing lives. How amazing is that!

Turns out 2 Timothy 1:7 is less about fear and more about His faithfulness.

His faithfulness to call us, to equip us, and to accomplish His plan over and through us.

And then beyond us.

Out of my daily devotions today, the Spirit suddenly whispers confirmation to my eager and willing heart.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6

Suffice it to say, this is giving me life right now.

My prayer for us today is that we’d walk in His purposes and plans for us without hesitation.
That’d we’d access all the ways He stands ready to equip and supply.
And that we do so in the knowledge that when He has a willing heart, what He’ll accomplish knows no limit.

If you enjoyed this mini series, I hope you’ll join us next week when we look at a verse on supernatural peace. I’m looking forward to seeing you all back here! Until then, remember… no hesitation. He’s got a plan.
